Performance Notes

During last night's gig at Doo Bop I realised that as deep as I always try to listen to everyone/everything and be in the moment when I play, there is still often deliberate thought happening regarding my playing. So for one tune I conducted a little experiment: I walked over near every soloist as they played and I listened with ALL MY BEING to them. In exactly the same manner that you listen when you're in your favourite chair, eyes closed, listening to your favourite record. I applied absolutely zero mental processing into what I was playing, allowing it just just happen. Now this is something I thought I did all the time but in truth there's usually a part of my brain that is actively aware of my musical choices.... This was different, this was complete surrender of control. I haven't seen the footage yet so I can't really assess what happened but the experience was liberating. I'll have to leave myself a little note to check out the footage of me playing with Wil Sargisson, Paul Henderson and Luke Pammenton on 25/7/18....
